Bahamas Vacations

Even though the Bahamas is tantalizingly close to the U.S., a vacation in the Bahamas will nonetheless transport you to another world. The country’s 14 main islands, and hundreds of smaller ones, offer a seemingly endless array of choices for a Bahamas beach vacation. Visitors marvel at the islands’ crystal-clear waters, boasting visibility of more than 200 feet. The clarity adds to the enjoyment of swimmers, boaters, anglers, snorkelers and divers (who especially enjoy the world’s largest underwater cave system off Grand Bahama Island).

A Bahamas vacation can be as lively or as quiet as you choose. You’ll find glamour and action on Nassau/Paradise Island, and peaceful seclusion on the remote Out Islands. Many resorts are tailor-made for a Bahamas family vacation, offering kids’ programs and babysitting services. No matter which island you visit, you’ll find that the warm Bahamian culture permeates the country. From the famous Junkanoo parades to Goombay music, cracked conch and numerous straw markets (Nassau’s being the largest in the world), the Bahamian way of life adds a rich layer to any Bahamas travel itinerary.

The Bahamas is a quick trip from the U.S. (Grand Bahama Island is just 55 miles from the coast of Florida). Hurricane season run from June through November, with August and September generally being the most hurricane-prone months. The Bahamas also has a rainy season, from May through October. Although the Bahamian dollar is the official currency, U.S. dollars and Bahamian dollars are accepted interchangeably. U.S. visitors departing by plane must present a passport. Those traveling by sea must carry a passport, or a certified birth certificate with a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license. (This is subject to change. for the latest information on U.S. re-entry requirements, visit the U.S. State Department’s website, travel.state.gov.) Driving is on the left-hand side in the Bahamas. To rent a car, drivers must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license. For more information on travel to the Bahamas, log on to the official tourism website, www.bahamas.com.
