Bermuda Vacations

Just 650 miles east of North Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean, Bermuda is a beguiling island destination that’s easily accessible from the East Coast. Those who travel to Bermuda are charmed by its beautiful, trademark pink sand and its picturesque, orderly towns. There’s quite a bit of history here, too. Bermuda is the oldest British colony, and the town of St. George—a UNESCO World Heritage site—is the oldest English-speaking colonial town in existence.

Many who vacation in Bermuda are newlyweds. The island’s reputation for romance has also made it a popular spot for weddings, which often include such Bermudian traditions as a kiss under a moongate (a ring-shaped arch), horse-drawn carriage ride and two wedding cakes. Bermuda is also known for its golf; the island boasts eight courses in its 21 square miles. Other popular diversions during a Bermuda vacation include diving (it’s considered the wreck-diving capital of the Atlantic), snorkeling, sailing and tennis.

The preferred document for entry to Bermuda is a passport, and U.S. visitors departing Bermuda by air require a passport to re-enter the U.S. (for more information on U.S. re-entry requirements, visit travel.state.gov, the U.S. State Department’s website). The official currency is the Bermudian dollar. U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere, but change is often given in Bermudian coins. Bermuda is just a two-hour flight from New York, and nonstop flights are offered from several other U.S. cities. It’s also a popular cruise ship destination; if you wish to avoid crowds, stay away from major attractions on cruise disembarkation days. It’s not possible to rent a car in Bermuda, since the island wants to avoid pollution and traffic. Travelers can get around by taxi, bus, ferry or scooter (a popular option). Remember driving is on the left. For more information on Bermuda travel, log on to www.bermudatourism.com, the department of tourism’s website.
