Cancun Vacations

It’s hard to believe the island of Cancun was deserted 40 years ago. Now connected to the mainland, this popular destination on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula was created specifically for tourism. Needless to say, the plan worked. More than 3 million people vacation in Cancun each year, and the name itself has become synonymous with fun in the sun.

Those embarking on a Cancun beach vacation will find 13 miles of powdery white-sand beaches facing the turquoise Caribbean Sea. A coral reef just offshore extends the entire length of Quintana Roo, the Mexican state where Cancun is located. It’s the largest coral reef ecosystem in America, enticing many who travel to Cancun to go snorkeling. Cave-diving in the area’s distinctive cenotes, or freshwater wells, is another popular pastime during a Cancun vacation. Many visitors also enjoy exploring remnants of the ancient Mayan culture in the surrounding area. Major archeological sites are within a two-hour drive, including Tulum and Chichen Itza. When it comes to accommodations, dining and shopping, vacationers can choose from a wide variety of options. Cancun’s 26,000-plus hotel rooms range from modest to luxury. Most are located in the Hotel Zone, which is bordered by the Caribbean and the Nichupte Lagoon. Especially convenient for a Cancun family vacation are the all-inclusive resorts, and the many spacious villas and condos that feature kitchens.

Although Mexico requires that U.S. citizens present either a passport or birth certificate/driver’s license to enter the country, to return to the U.S. visitors traveling by air must present a passport. Those traveling by land or sea may be required to present a passport as well, so it’s recommended that all U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico carry a valid passport (for more information on U.S. re-entry requirements, visit travel.state.gov, the U.S. State Department’s website). No visa is required for U.S. citizens. There are many direct flights from the U.S. into Cancun International Airport, where there are many car rental options. A valid driver’s license and major credit card are required to rent a car, and the minimum age is 25. Those without a car can easily get around Cancun by taxi or bus. Spanish is the official language. The Mexican Peso is the official currency, though U.S. dollars are accepted most places. Cancun’s average temperatures range from 68°F to 91°F, with July-September being the hottest months.
