Dominican Republic Vacations

The Dominican Republic, named the Caribbean’s number-one destination by the World Tourism Organization in 2006, is being discovered by more and more travelers. They vacation in the Dominican Republic to experience the country’s beautiful Caribbean and Atlantic beaches, old colonial cities, picture-perfect national parks, and a vibrant culture that’s known for its merengue dancing and love of baseball.

A Dominican Republic vacation can be as active or as laid-back as you choose. The many all-inclusive resorts offer a hassle-free way to see the country, which occupies two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola (the remaining third is occupied by Haiti). Since the country is home to the Caribbean’s highest mountains and longest rivers, Dominican Republic family vacations often include rafting, kayaking and mountain biking. Golf is also a popular pastime for those who travel to the Dominican Republic (including former President Clinton and former President Bush, who’ve both teed off there). The D.R. boasts 19 courses with oceanfront fairways designed by the most famous golf-course architects in the world.

U.S. citizens require a valid passport to travel to the Dominican Republic. Prior to entering the immigration line, visitors are required to purchase a Tourist Card for $10 USD. One-half of the card is collected upon entry while the other half needs to be presented upon departure. The Dominican peso is the official currency, but the U.S. dollar is accepted at most tourist establishments and is often preferred. Spanish is the official language although many resort employees speak English. There are eight international airports in the Dominican Republic, and travelers over the age of 25 with a valid U.S. driver’s license can rent a car.
