The cosmopolitan city of Hong Kong offers an intriguing blend of the East and West. A territory of the U.K. for more than 150 years, Hong Kong is now a Special Administrative Region of China, functioning with a high degree of autonomy from the mainland. The city’s blending of British and Chinese cultures, and its status as one of the world’s key financial centers, make a Hong Kong vacation an exhilarating experience, with sights to see around every turn.
A Hong Kong travel itinerary must include shopping. Whether you’re looking for bargains or luxury goods, you’ll find them in Hong Kong. The city’s markets are legendary, including Central Market (with all kinds of Cantonese delicacies on display), Stanley Market (great for souvenir shopping) and the Flower Market. Hong Kong is home to a number of great hotels, both on Hong Kong Island and on Kowloon. Wherever you stay, be sure to take the Star ferry across the harbor between the two. A vacation in Hong Kong should also include a tram ride up Victoria Peak, from which you can take in fantastic views of Victoria Harbour and all of Hong Kong’s skyscrapers (it’s home to thousands, more than anywhere else in the world). Other top attractions include traditional Chinese temples, amusement parks (including Disneyland), the numerous restaurants and tea rooms, and the trendy bars, many offering prime views of the stunning skyline.
U.S. visitors to Hong Kong must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months after their planned departure date. A visa is not required for visits of up to 90 days. Visitors flying into Hong Kong International Airport have the option of taking the Airport Express, a high-speed train, to the Hong Kong and Kowloon stations. A free shuttle bus from the stations serves major hotels. Because of the congestion in Hong Kong and the abundance of taxis and public transportation, renting a car is not a popular option and not necessary. Hong Kong has a subtropical climate. Temperatures are warmest from late May to mid-September, when they range from about 79°F to 91°F. The coolest time is mid-December to February, when temperatures range from about 57°F to 68°F. Typhoon season is May to November. Currency is the Hong Kong dollar. For more information on a vacation to Hong Kong, log on to www.discoverhongkong.com, the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s website.
