New Zealand Vacations

For nature-lovers, New Zealand is a dream come true. It’s one of the world’s least-crowded countries, and one of the most ecologically diverse. Those who travel to New Zealand can see fiords, active volcanoes, snow-capped mountains, glaciers, pristine beaches, rainforest, and extraordinary flora and fauna (80 percent of the country’s flora and much of its fauna is unique to New Zealand, owing to the country’s geographic isolation in the South Pacific).

New Zealand consists of two main islands (North Island and South Island) and many smaller ones. Throughout the country visitors will find an interesting blend of cultures, primarily stemming from the European and Maori heritage of many Kiwis. A New Zealand vacation often includes bungee jumping—invented in the popular tourist destination of Queenstown—and other outdoor activities, including kayaking, skiing, whale-watching, hiking and swimming with dolphins. Zorbing—getting into a big plastic ball and rolling down a hill—is another Kiwi invention that many visitors try. Of course, a vacation in New Zealand also offers cosmopolitan diversions, particularly in Auckland, home to 80-plus vineyards that influenc its innovative dining scene.

U.S. visitors to New Zealand require a passport that’s valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date. For stays of up to three months, no visa is required. However, travelers must show proof of onward or return travel, and provide evidence that they can support themselves financially while in New Zealand. Rental cars are available (advance reservations recommended), and 21 is the average minimum age required to rent a car. Driving is on the left. Air travel time to Auckland from the U.S. West Coast is about 13 hours, and nonstop flights are available. The north of New Zealand is a subtropical climate, while the south is temperate. The summer months (December-February) are the warmest months, with average maximum temperatures between 68°F and 86°F, and the country’s busiest travel period. During the winter, June-August, average highs range between 50°F and 59°F. English is New Zealand’s common language, while Maori is also an official language. Currency is the New Zealand dollar.
