Switzerland Vacations

The scenery in Switzerland is world-renowned. Those who travel to Switzerland can feast their eyes on the towering peaks of the Swiss Alps, blooming Alpine meadows, crystal-clear lakes and charming chalets. The country’s blend of German, French and Italian heritage adds an interesting cultural aspect to the surrounding beauty. And, owing to the nation’s legendary efficiency, your Swiss vacation is bound to run as smoothly as a Swiss watch.

Best of all, it’s easy to take in the best of the country during a Switzerland vacation. Not only is it easily accessible within Europe—between France, Germany, Austria and Italy—it’s only 137 miles long and 216 miles wide. A Switzerland travel itinerary could include the Mediterranean liveliness of the south, with its clean beaches, outdoor cafes and Romanesque churches; the French flair of Lake Geneva; the breathtaking sight of the Matterhorn; sweeping mountain vistas; and numerous cultural attractions nationwide, including more than 700 museums. Each Swiss city offers its own flavor, from cosmopolitan Geneva to architecturally rich Basel to historic Bern, with its renowned Old Town. Opportunities for skiing, hiking and cycling abound. You’ll never run out of things to do in this fascinating, compact country.

U.S. visitors traveling to Switzerland require a valid passport. No visa is required for stays of up to 90 days. Most direct flights from the U.S. fly into Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city. It’s also easy to travel to and around Switzerland via its extensive rail system. Renting a car can be expensive. Driving is on the right. Switzerland’s national languages are German (spoken in the north, center and east), French (spoken in the west), Italian (spoken in the south) and Romansh (spoken in the southeast). If all that doesn’t help then it’s good to know that English is widely spoken throughout the country. Switzerland’s climate is generally moderate, with temperatures varying depending on the altitude. In July and August, temperatures generally range from about 65°F to 82°F, while in January and February they range from about 28°F to 45°F. The official currency is the Swiss franc, although merchants may accept euros. For more information on a vacation in Switzerland, log on to www.myswitzerland.com, Switzerland Tourism’s website.
