Turkey Vacations

An intriguing blend of the East and West, Turkey boasts a location and culture that draws from both Europe and the Middle East. Those who vacation in Turkey will discover a land brimming with fascinating historical sites and natural beauty.

Turkey’s historic treasures span 13 civilizations over 10,000 years. In Istanbul, Europe’s most populous city and the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, the historic areas have been named UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Top Istanbul sites that shouldn’t be missed during a Turkey vacation include the Hagia Sofia, the famous Byzantine structure built as a cathedral in the 6th century; the 17th-century Blue Mosque; and Topkapi Palace, former residence of Sultans and their harems. Beyond Istanbul, unforgettable Turkey destinations include Cappadocia, with its lunar-like terrain and ancient underground cities; the ancient ruins of Troy; and Ephesus, the best-preserved classical city in the Eastern Mediterranean. A Turkey travel itinerary can also include idyllic beach experiences. It’s bordered by the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea, with the inland Sea of Marmara separating the European section of Turkey from the Asian part. Excellent food, wine and shopping are also essential features of a Turkey vacation.

U.S. citizens visiting Turkey require a valid passport and visa. Tourists can purchase a 90-day sticker visa at the port of entry for $20 cash. Travelers are advised to ensure they receive an entry stamp on their passport when they enter the country. Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport is Turkey’s main point of entry. Car rentals from major companies are available. Turkish is the official language. Currency is the New Turkish Lira. Weather in Turkey varies. The Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean coasts have hot summers and mild winters. April to October are ideal months for coastline visits, while Istanbul is a year-round destination, with average temperatures ranging from 41°F in January to 74°F in mid-summer.
