Travel has been a passion of mine since my first package holiday abroad to Mallorca at 17. From then I knew I’d caught the bug! I was lucky enough to spend over 10 years living and working overseas for tour operators in The Balearics, Mainland Spain, Canaries, Portugal, Cyprus and Mexico. On returning to the UK I continued contracting hotels throughout mainland Europe and Scandinavia and then spent many years with travel suppliers working alongside tour operators and travel agents.
I have been fortunate to have visited over 25 countries including Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Kenya, all the Spanish islands and nearly all of the Greek islands! I’ve experienced many types of travel aside from beach holidays including ski, cruises, city breaks and safari travelling as a couple, then as a family, on business and also with groups of friends so understand the needs of all types of travellers. My personal favourites have to be Santorini for the dramatic scenery and stunning blue domes, Mykonos with its windmills and sugar cube houses (plus Shirley Valentine moments!), Mexico for its excitement, culture and beaches and Gran Canaria for its year-round sunshine. However you can’t beat a cruise to experience a variety of exciting destinations all in one trip!

In March of this year I was lucky enough to be invited on a Travel Counsellors educational, courtesy of the Moroccan Tourist Board to explore the city of Marrakesh and the coastal resort of Essaouira.
On arrival at Marrakesh airport I was amazed at the stunning modern design of the airport and how smoothly we passed through. From there our transfer into the city was also a very pleasant surprise with wide, clean, modern boulevards and non of the chaos you might expect. We had a perfectly planned 5 day itinerary with our base in Marrakesh at the 5* Movenpick Mansour Eddhabi Hotel. The Movenpick hotel is a modern hotel adjoined to the city’s conference centre but is designed with traditional touches and water features throughout the hotel. It offers excellent rooms & suites plus 2 outdoor pools and a spa.
On our first afternoon we headed out to explore ‘The Red City’, the name given to Marrakesh due to all buildings having to be painted in the traditional ochre colour to match the old walls of the Medina. We enjoyed a tour of the old Souk on foot with a local guide who showed us the workshops where the goods sold in the more modern Souk are actually made. The shops sell a mixture of leather goods, slippers and scarves, woodwork and intricately patterned metalwork lamps, teapots and vases. Bartering is a must, especially in the old souk, always aim to pay around a third to a quarter of their original asking price. Don’t be afraid of walking away, they usually come running with a better price! You do need your wits about you in the narrow alleyways to dodge the locals squeezing through on their scooters and motorcycles.
Our tour brought us into the main tourist Souk with its magical colours and fragrant spices stalls to finish in the famous Jemaa el Fna square and the tower of the Kutubiyya mosque. After watching the magical sunset over the square from the rooftop of a local tea house we enjoyed a traditional meze-like dinner followed by slow roasted chicken and lamb in Salama restaurant just off the main square complete with belly dancing show!
The following day we began our hotel visits, firstly heading 15 minutes out of Marrakesh to the Royal Palm Hotel & Golf Resort. This lovely hotel is an ideal for the whole family out of the hubbub of the city. It boasts its own 18 hole golf course, stunning spa and an amazing kids club with its own pool and tennis court just for the little ones. There is of course tennis for the grown-ups too! There are variety of deluxe rooms and suites all with views over the pool area or golf course and beyond to the Atlas mountains.
Heading back into Marrakesh our next visit was to the luxurious Royal Mansour where all accommodation is in individual Riads (typical Morrocan 3 or 4 storey houses) which are opulently decorated in a very traditional style with the added luxury of your own rooftop terrace and plunge pool. The spa and restaurants are world renowned and we were lucky enough to enjoy a lovely lunch here.
During the afternoon there was a choice of go-karting or Moroccan cookery school activities. I opted to learn the traditional way of cooking with a tagine. Firstly, before entering the kitchen we learnt the traditional mint tea ceremony which is not as simple as just putting a teabag into a cup! The modern kitchen was set out for groups with high tech screens allowing you to watch the chef and then repeat her process on your own hob. We then enjoyed eating our dishes in a Bedouin themed dining area. This was my favourite afternoon and is a great experience to introduce you to local recipes, cooking methods and spices. The tagine pot was one of the most popular souvenirs we all brought home!
International cuisine was served for dinner that evening at the lively Palace Restaurant with western music and guests encouraged to dance during dinner. A very popular choice with our group of Travel Counsellors!
On our third day we headed to the foothills of the Atlas mountains. The snow-capped mountains are visible from Marrakesh itself but our journey of 2 hours took us through the olive groves, blossom trees, green hillsides and villages. Hidden in a scenic valley we found the newly built retreat of L’Armandier. A small boutique hotel and a collection of luxury villas that all enjoy breathtaking views to the snow-covered mountains. Guests can enjoy the tranquillity of the gorgeous pool, have a game of tennis or head out walking. L’Armandier’s restaurant also offers gourmet cuisine made using fresh local ingredients. Dinner that evening was enjoyed in the Jad Mahal nightclub which offered entertainment from belly dancers, gauchos and a live band.
On day four we bade farewell to Marrakesh to head 3 hour's drive to Essaouira on the Atlantic coast. En-route we visited a women’s Argan Oil co-operative where they demonstrated the manual processes for extracting the argan nut and then the oil which is manufactured into a variety of health and beauty products. We also witnessed the ‘tree-climbing’ goats at the side of the highway. The goats love the argan tree fruit so have learnt to climb the trees in order to feast away!
On arrival at Essaouira we visited the Sofitel Mogador. Situated on the coast slightly out of town, this hotel boasts two 18 hole golf courses, 3 pools and a fabulous spa. It has quirky art and design features throughout the hotel and offers both hotel rooms and villas with private pools. There are regular courtesy buses to take you into town but at this hotel relaxation enjoying fabulous sea views across the golf courses is the main activity. We enjoyed a lovely Mediterranean style lunch with excellent service.
We then had free time to explore the old medina and souk of Essaouira. This medina has a fabulous location on the coast though due to ongoing renovation works we were unable to enjoy walking the walls with their spectacular views. The souk here is a lot more laid back than Marrakesh with less bartering required as many goods have fixed prices, but it is still worth a try!
We then headed back to our hotel for the evening, the Atlas Hotel & Spa. This large hotel is situated overlooking the wide expanse of beach where you can enjoy kite surfing, wind surfing or horse riding. This hotel has its own beach bar where we enjoyed drinks watching the beautiful sunset and recounted our favourite parts of the trip. Our final delicious dinner took place in a Relais & Chateaux approved Riad within the medina, L’Heure Bleue which is both a hotel with its own rooftop pool and offers private dining.
An early departure the following morning took us back to Marrakesh for our flight home. This trip was a great surprise to me. I was amazed at the mix of modernity and history, the welcome we received was fabulous and the standard and variety of accommodation available. Morocco offers something for everyone and I look forward to returning.

Can't recommend Barbara highly enough. Recommended by a friend who regularly uses her, I decided to ask Barbara to quote for a Christmas break to the Maldives for myself and my family, despite rarely using a travel agent & preferring to book independently. Barbara easily eclipsed several other travel agents in Prestbury and Wilmslow who were coming up with holidays that were either over-priced or ignored our specifications. Barbara found several options of great flights and excellent resorts and we had a brilliant break with our end choice; it was as if covid hadn't happened for two weeks. I would really like to recommend the services of Travel Counsellor Barbara Sutton. When our summer holiday plans to Spain fell through, I contacted Barbara to ask for her advice & help on booking to go to Greece instead. Have always booked flights, accommodation etc myself but having realised the benefit & security of booking a package, Barbara’s knowledge, help and guidance was invaluable. Just come back from another great holiday organised by Barbara, this time in Fuerteventura. Throughout the process she is always friendly, helpful and organised, even writing out our baggage labels for us and providing a map of the island. Barbara also kept an eye on the seat reservations ready to alert us if we needed to pay to reserve seats in advance of check-in to ensure our family could sit together. In the end we didn’t need to pay as she was able to get us seats together when online check-in opened 24hrs before flying both outbound and inbound. Barbara is easily contactable even when abroad to clarify/resolve any issues. Whilst away she emailed us the boarding passes so all we needed to do was print them out at the hotel and present at the check-in desk thus making the journey smoother and less stressful. Absolutely fantastic service - we wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Barbara! She oversaw such little details that you don’t get from a high street or online tour operator. She gave us advice on flying into a different airport (which ended up saving us a few hundred pounds). She checked us in online, seats pre-booked, she even wrote out our luggage labels! When we received our tickets she had included local maps/attraction leaflets for our destination which we found very helpful as we could plan excursions before our arrival. We had to go through transit at Philadelphia to connect with our onward flight down to Florida - there was a big storm down the East Coast and Barbara took the time to text us and check that we had connected with our flight as there had been delays. It’s little touches like this that make you believe the Travel Counsellors motto “With us it’s personal”. Barbara’s knowledge of all things ‘travel’ is fantastic. She is very quick to reply to any queries (and we had a lot of them). Can’t see us going anywhere else in future to book holidays - the only problem we’ll have is where to go.

Fantastic! We booked our holiday with Barbara for the first time and visited Protaras in Cyprus in August. We asked her to recommend places based on the fact we love sandy beaches, to be near restaurants and a bit of nightlife with 2 daughters, one a teenager. Within hours I had a choice to browse through, mainly Greece which is where I asked for. Barbara added on the one in Cyprus which she said she thinks 'ticks all the boxes'! It was perfect and we booked it straight away. Once there we loved the place. Our 2 bed apartment (Corelli Spa) was clean, friendly and a good size with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms so the kids had their own which was a godsend.
Upon our return we asked Barbara to look at Greece for us. Virtually the same day a big list with suggestions came back and bingo..... another gem was there, this time in Elounda, Crete. It looks amazing so we have booked and are looking forward to it next summer. Barbara also came to our house with all the documents and tags for luggage written out. She booked our seats on the plane. I can go on! Thanks Barbara you've really helped take the pain out of looking for holidays. Highly recommend.

We were unsure whether to use an agent for our road trip to Brittany or just book the ferry and accommodation directly. Barbara organised an epic honeymoon for us, with three weeks of travelling through many stops in Western Canada, including the astounding views provided by two days on the Rocky Mountaineer and an unforgettable 7-night Alaskan Cruise. Barbara is a very caring and diligent person who provides an excellent service and consider all different options for travelling to suit your needs. Barbara organised our wedding package in 2017 and holidays to the destination and we can't thank her enough for giving us opportunity to have a dream wedding destination and excellent holiday time. Barbara has been nothing short of fantastic throughout the whole holiday booking experience and I can't recommend her enough. Going above and beyond is a rarity in customer service these days, however it appeared that it was a given with Barbara. Everything was made so simple and easy, and little things thrown in to make the experience even more enjoyable. Barbara found us an incredible deal - just to put it into perspective - the price of our trip amounted to what the hotel was costing alone if I was to book direct myself, and best of all it saved me so much time and doesn't cost a penny in fees (even though I wouldn't hesitate to pay a fee as the service is that good!). Barbara organised everything for us including accommodation and flights and answered a lot of questions for us as it was our first ever trip to Disney but nothing was too much trouble. Barbara really took the stress out of organising it all for us meaning all we had to do was look forward to it. The day before we travelled our original flight was cancelled due to strikes and Barbara sourced an alternative flight for us in record time at no extra costs to ourselves! Without Barbara I don't even know if we would have made it as I wouldn't have had a clue what to do to find another flight last minute! Absolutely amazing support and help with planning me husband's 40th. Would definitely recommend. It was our first time doing a multi centre holiday but everything was so well planned by Barbara down to every last detail including a birthday cake for my husband which even I didn't know about. The hotels selected by Barbara were amazing. We went to Hong Kong first, then Bangkok and then onto Krabi all were exceptional. I don't think I'll ever book via anyone else again.

I have just returned from a holiday sourced, suggested and booked for me by Barbara. I wasn’t an easy one to please and wanted top quality on a reasonable budget. Oh! And I was traveling alone so wanted to feel safe.
Barbara suggested I looked at a resort called Ras Al Khaimah (never heard of it before and for those who still haven’t, it’s a fabulous resort about 50 mins drive from Dubai airport) Like most people would, I took her suggestion and trawled the internet to find what I naively thought would be a bargain compared to what Barbara was going to offer me. . How wrong I was, MYTH: Travel Counsellors will be more expensive than booking direct!! NO THEY ARE NOT! I found a b&b version in a hotel of my choice that would have cost me £200 more than the deal Barbara got me in the same hotel, on my dates of choice, fully inclusive with private transfers!!
The whole holiday surpassed every expectation I had. . A truly perfect location for me and I am so grateful that Barbara had the experience and insight to suggest the resort that was right for my needs. I am guessing that is the greatest bonus in using Barbara, she offers a wealth of knowledge and insight into resorts and regions that some of us don’t even know exist!
Quite simply I can honestly say if I was booking a weekend trip, a spa retreat, a holiday or anything of that nature I will look to use Barbara and suggest everyone does the same. . Her professionalism and personal service sets her above the rest and can’t recommend her more highly.

Just returned from a family holiday to Gran Canaria. Amazing recommendation for our hotel. The Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso was amazing with breathtaking views. It was certainly wheelchair friendly. Thank you Barbara for all your help. I'm sure we'll be in touch soon.

Barbara went above and beyond in helping us find a trip to Lapland this Christmas. When our budget didn’t stretch as far as we hoped it would, she suggested alternatives (day trip!) and was very reassuring when we had wobbles due to some bad reviews we read after booking. She knew we were surprising the children and had gone to special lengths to help with the surprise, arriving with the tickets and also invites and presents from Santa when she came to give us everything we needed for our trip a week beforehand. Couldn’t fault the service we received, absolutely no hesitation in recommending and will be using again! Thanks so much Barbara for making our once in a lifetime trip really special from conception to delivery!

Thanks to Barbara, we had an amazing wedding day and holidays on Greek Island Zante! She organised our flights, accommodation, wedding venue and reception. Also helped with organising flights and accommodation to our family. It took few months of preparation and Barbara helped us every step we made and supported us with information we required, made sure we had all correct legal information for our marriage abroad. Can't thank you enough for all your planning and help with our special day and holidays! I would like to say thank you so much for being an excellent travel agent and supporting us with the most professional customer service I have had before, during and after the holiday.
My family and I have had an amazing time! The weather was great the complex perfect for families. Clean, modern and exceptionally well run.
Apart from the lost tablet my son left on the plane, which you promptly found and sorted out. We arrived to a lovely apartment. Spacious and fully set up for a family to base themselves for the holiday.
Jet2 were easy to fly with (basic - as all budget airlines are) however extremely prompt and helpful. Thank you again for taking time and care to make sure our family holiday was one to remember.

Instead of having to trawl the internet for hours on end, Barbara did the work for us, which saved us a huge amount of time. Making the booking, sorting flights and villa out, booking a hire car - nothing was too much trouble. Barbara even personally delivered our boarding passes, having checked us in online. We've always booked our own holidays which usually involves my husband trawling the Internet trying to get the best deal. Having Barbara do the hard work for us was fantastic. Using our budget she found us a fantastic holiday and was booked and paid for with no problem. She was happy to speak to us late at night to get it booked so we didn't miss the last room. Barbara checked in online for us and hand delivered our tickets and information. She even bought a goody bag for my little boy to open on the plane it was such a lovely touch. She'd got a map of Costa Adeje and circled where was good to go if we wanted to venture out of the hotel. On our way home she emailed me the day before after she'd checked in online for us. This was great as we fast tracked at the airport instead of getting in the very long queue... A godsend with children!! Barbara was so lovely to deal with and I wouldn't hesitate about booking our next holiday with her. Thank you Barbara for finding us a great family holiday and adding that extra special touch.
