My Travel Diaries
When I visited Toronto I was thrilled to find that it was full of life and had a vibrancy I’d not really experienced before in other cities. It was clean and felt safe to walk around and explore. Not too crowded either and it was easy to navigate my way around.
Shopping is a must do activity in any city (well if you’re a woman anyway!) and Toronto has it all – boutique, designer shops as well as department stores. Shopping is a must do activity in any city (well if you’re a shopaholic anyway!) and Toronto has it all – boutique, designer shops as well as department stores. Many of them are found in the Eaton Centre – a huge shopping mall that has the advantage of being undercover so a great destination for a winter city break and a good alternative to New York.
One of the best ways to see any city is on one of the bus tours, but in Toronto they go a step further. ‘Hippo Tours’ offer a road tour and a boat tour combined on a bus that goes both on land and water. It’s a fun way to find out all about what to see and do in Toronto and the views from the water on Lake Ontario are any photographer’s dream! Prices are around £24 per person and they leave every hour on the hour and concessions for families and seniors are available too.
Another ‘must do’ experience is dinner at the CN Tower – you’ll need to book but the food is great and the views across the city and Lake Ontario are stupendous.
We only had two nights in Toronto and very little time to explore so I will definitely be going back but no visit to Ontario would be complete without a visit to Niagara Falls, just ninety minutes drive by coach from Toronto. Tours depart daily and can be booked locally or in advance. A trip on ‘Maid of the Mist’ may leave you drenched (I was more sensible and stayed downstairs undercover as I wanted to protect my camera) so take a change of clothes just in case.
If you have the time then take a helicopter flight over the Falls – a thrilling experience and not too expensive for a once in a lifetime treat.
Toronto and Niagara make for an amazing city break and a good alternative to New York and Boston; especially late September and early October when the fall colours are at their best. Only 6 hours 40 minutes by air from the UK so it’s easy to get to.
