California Dreamin! I was so lucky to spend a week in California with lovely fellow Travel Counsellors on the most amazing road trip. We flew with Air New Zealand and were treated to their amazing sky couches – well worth the extra money for the flight, food, service and seat pitch and we even had our own lovely Paul from Air NZ to accompany us on the trip! California Dreaming was the soundtrack which accompanied us on our road trip. To say we packed in loads over our six nights is an understatement! We collected four cars from Alamo – one of them a soft top Mustang – a must in California. We then made our way to our first hotel the Loews in Hollywood – a super five star hotel with super facilities which even has a Starbucks in reception! Our day started off with checking out our views from our room – we could see the HOLLYWOOD sign! We walked to the W Hotel via the Hollywood walk of fame where we saw the famous stars on the pavements. Breakfast at the W was gorgeous, we were entertained by Chloe and Celia from the W then had a show round the various room types, and even dipped our toes in the roof top pool! Our morning ended with a walking tour of Hollywood where we took in the Egyptian theatre and saw pavement hand prints of the stars outside the Chinese Theatre and the setting for the Oscars. Next stop – Santa Barbara! The lid off the Mustang and we were off! We arrived just after sunset but it was still beautiful and we were treated to our own rooms with balcony and sea view at the lovely Harbour View Inn! A quick change, wine tasting on the pier then Italian meal before a few of us sampled the Santa Barbara nightlife! Early up and a brisk walk to the Kimpton hotel for breakfast and a look round. As this was Thanksgiving the town was quiet and shops closed. We had a look at the top of the clock tower then a harbour boat trip, followed by quad bikes on the front (as in four to a bike, not off roaders)! What a laugh and a great way to see Santa Barbara. Thanksgiving dinner was courtesy of the Santa Barbara tourist board with the lovely Jen who had given up her family time to host us. It had to be a turkey dinner didn’t it?! After a good nights’ sleep, we set off in convoy on the PCH – the Pacific Coastal Highway! Destination Santa Monica with a photo stop en route at Paradise beach near to Malibu. Our one night stay was at Le Meridien Definia, 20 mins walk from the front and a good position with fabulous facilities, even bikes you can use to check out the strip! We were treated to a pier tour and Ferris wheel ride then super lunch at Rustys. Next was a four mile bike ride – we each had our own bikes this time for our ride along the sea front to muscle beach and Venice Beach. A great way to see the area and I would thoroughly recommend this mode of transport. It is a very family friendly resort too with lots going on for families on the beach and pier! We made it in time for sunset – we had sundowners on the roof top terrace of the Erwin hotel in town, a particular highlight of the trip! We then a look round the Loews hotel right on the sea front. There was no dinner planned this evening so impromptu pizza and hot toddies round the fire pits on the decking at the Loews – bliss! We finished the evening with a visit to the bar which features in the new drama Goliath – the one Billy Bob Thornton frequents! A visit to California is not complete without taking in Beverly Hills. We visited Sprinkles the cupcake ATM then Only in Beverly Hills shop to satisfy our shopping habits. Would you believe you can park free for two hours in Beverly Hills! I can’t even do that in my home town! Our final stop was Palm Springs and two nights at the Hyatt Regency! A very relaxing, spread out resort, great for golfers and if you like the great outdoors. It was now time to say goodbye Mustang and LA, and as Arnie would say – I’ll be back!

35 years since our last trip to New York and the opportunity came up to go again. We had 5 magical nights in the Big Apple and it certainly didn’t disappoint us! Travelling in late November we saw the start of the Christmas lights - so lovely and twinkly and everywhere was gearing up for Thanksgiving! From arrival into Newark Liberty Airport on the Wednesday afternoon, we didn’t stop for 6 days! The last time we were there, I took a photo of the World Trade Center – the ‘Twin Towers’ and I won a local photo competition with my photo taken from the ground upwards! This time, it was a very moving experience to see the Ground zero footings where 2 huge waterfalls mark out the perimeter of the World Trade Centres. The Empire State was our first port of call when we’d arrived and checked into our hotel, it was just going dark and the city look magical I was very much looking forward to seeing New York and doing as much as we could in our time there. We did 2 bike rides – one from south Manhattan – over the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn then back over the Brooklyn Bridge – it was a beautiful sunny day and we thoroughly enjoyed it – a great way to see the New York way of life. On Sunday we did a cycle tour of Central Park with a guide It is a lot bigger and hillier that I remembered it and so much to see – you can really lose yourself there! We did a couple of audio walking tours with a guide. The first one was of the Rockafeller Center Tour . It was so interesting and our guide made it fun – even though it was raining and most of the tour was outside! We also did a self - guided tour of Grand Central Station , what an amazing building you must do this! If you are ready to eat – why not start the day with breakfast at Pershing Square – just near the main entrance to Grand Central Station. Radio City Music Hall Stage Door Tour was also a superb visit! We complemented this with by going to see the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City with the world famous Rockettes – what a brilliant way to start off the festive season. A trip to New York would not be complete without a cruise round Manhattan on the Circle line 'Best of New York' – 2 hours of commentary by a very experienced guide, we got to see the Statue of Liberty close up. It was a ‘pinch me’ moment! Top of the Rock on Saturday morning – what a beautiful day it was – clear blue skies and a nice chill in the air. This is a brilliant viewing point – I think this is the best high rised viewing point in New York. North you can see Central Park and to the South – towards Brooklyn, The One World Tower and all Manhattan has to offer. We also found time to visit the trendy Meat Packing area, High line, this is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. Chelsea Market and Greenwich with the funky French café’s and intimate bars. Of course we went shopping and also enjoyed breakfast in a cool American Diner – where they feed you so well, you don’t need to eat for the rest of the day! We loved our trip to New York, I would definitely go back and I love telling all my lovely clients about our amazing holiday and how to make theirs enjoyable and unforgettable!

In May this year, I was very lucky to be chosen to board Holland America lines Nieuw Amsterdam cruise ship on an educational visit! We flew into Venice early morning and were met and transferred to our beautiful ship. Having only visited one of Nieuw’s sister ships, the older and smaller Ryndam, I knew I was in for a treat! Nieuw Amsterdam was majestically moored in port – awaiting our embarkation. The purpose of the trip was to sample part of the Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona. Along with three other Travel Counsellors and 10 other agents, we were sailing from Venice to Istanbul. Both ports are fabulous to sail from and to, very impressive. Our balcony cabin awaited out arrival, spacious and very well appointed, we soon settled in then set off to explore our new home for the next five nights. Lunch was a lavish affair in the Lido Restaurant – practically anything you wanted to eat was being served up! I opted for the freshly grilled tuna and salad – it was delicious! On deck it was very relaxed, gentle music playing in the background and we were soon setting sail down the Grand Canal, the views were awesome! Dinner followed our welcome drinks and canapes and time to get to know our fellow agents, a great group of people and we all got on really well. Tuesday dawned and we continued our sail south down the Adriatic whilst enjoying the facilities on board. So much to do and you can do as little or as much as you wish. Something to suit everybody, spa, gym, hydro pool, private cabanas for hire if you wish. Club Hal and the Loft to keep children of all ages happy. The Crow’s Nest – the best viewing point when leaving and arriving into port, computers and a super library too. That evening we had our formal evening all dressed in our evening gear, we ate in the Manhattan Restaurant, a very special evening and the food was delicious too! in fact all the restaurants were excellent, we ate at Pinnacle Grill, the speciality restaurant as well as Tamarind my favourite delicious Asian cuisine. Evening entertainment on board is very varied: Jeremy tinkled the ivories in the piano bar – he was fabulous so entertaining and he created a great atmosphere, you struggled to get a seat in the room! Songs from the shows in the Showroom. Disco Northern Lights, plenty of bars and the in ship band – BB Kings entertained us until the small hours!! The next morning we woke up to beautiful views, we had moored up in The small fishing village of Katákolon it is gateway to the mystical site of ancient Olympia, 25 miles to the east, this was the site of the first Olympic Games. We wandered the streets of this sleepy village and took in the scenery, a local coffee and chatted with the locals. Continuing our sail we arrived into Piraeus the port of Athens early the next morning. We did the open top bus tour – scorching weather that day – the hottest day of the year so far in Athens! Seeing the Acropolis didn’t disappoint making my first visit to Greece so memorable. Finally we sailed into Istanbul where east meets west - and just managed to squeeze in a trip to the Grand Bazaar, haggle for our souvenirs, and finished off a lovely week with a traditional Turkish Meze and the local beer. I will be back to Greece and Turkey definitely – this was my first time both countries but certainly not my last…….

Awesome Aurora Adventure! I’ve just returned from a superb cruising holiday to the Norwegian Fjords. I had a lovely family holiday with my Mum and sisters on P & O’s Aurora Cruise ship This was my first cruise with P & O and I was really looking forward to enjoying the experience with my family. My parents had cruised on Aurora 10 years ago so Mum was really looking forward to showing us the ropes! We had a very comfortable journey to Southampton with Eavesway Coaches, it didn’t feel like a 6 hour journey as we had regular comfort stops enroute. We were whisked through check in and before we knew it, we were settled into our cabins and enjoying the send off from Southampton by the Scottish Piping Band! After exploring our ship, we had a ‘Casual’ evening in our restaurant, the Alexandria and were treated to fine food and wine with excellent service. Next day was a day at sea as we sailed towards our first port of call, Stavanger. This gave us an opportunity to explore the ship fully and take advantage of the lovely shops on board and have a really relaxing day. Monday was the first of 2 formal evenings and the Captain’s Welcome Party where we were treated to pre dinner drinks and had a chance to chat to the ship’s crew – what a lovely group of people they were too, nothing was too much trouble. Tuesday morning we docked in Stavanger and after a leisurely breakfast, had chance to go on land and explore the city of Stavanger – which just so happened to be one of the ports of call on the 2011 Tall Ships Race. We were treated to some very interesting sailing vessels! That evening we set sail for our next port of call, Olden which is located at the end of Nordfjord. What a special treat to wake up to, I pulled the curtains back and couldn’t believe my eyes………….. the spectacular scenery unfolding, see the photos showing the awesome scenery. We had a very early wake up call, but it was well it! We were taken for an early morning to cruise the length of Oldevatnet Lake where we could see the foot of the Briksdal Glacier, after a leisurely stroll back to Aurora, we had a sunny afternoon on deck enjoying the beautiful sunshine – what a bonus! Next stop was Flåm Beautiful Flåm is situated in the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord, a tributary of the 204 kilometres long and up to 1308 metres deep Sognefjord. Surrounded by steep mountainsides, roaring waterfalls and deep valleys, Flåm is a paradise for everyone looking for a one-of-a-kind experience with nature. The world famous railway at Flam, one of the steepest in the world had been fully booked for weeks, so settled on a visit to the museum which was very interesting. Sailing out of Flåm that evening, you couldn’t help but wonder how the local people manage to get about, I’m sure many rely on using boats for their day to day transport. Our final stop was Bergen and to get a feel of the city, we took the hop on, hop off city bus tour, our final stop was the Bergen Fish Market – a real feast for the eyes, I’ve never seen so many different varieties of fish. We had the opportunity to try minke whale, caviar and salmon cooked in a variety of different ways! As it was also lunch time, we couldn’t resist some seafood with a bottle of the local beer for good measure. Before making our way back our ship, we visited the famous ‘wonky ‘ houses This UNESCO protected old merchant quarter is the only preserved business district from the Hanseatic period (the alliance of trading cities and merchant guilds which dominated the trade along the coast of Northern Europe) some of which date back to the 14th to mid 16th centuries. After sampling the local waffles and visiting the street markets, we made our way back to Aurora. What a lovely leisurely way to travel and I know we will definitely be travelling by sea and Aurora again!

I couldn’t believe it when an opportunity to visit Marrakech came up in June this year…………..another of my ‘wish list’ destinations and it certainly lived up to my expectations! The direct flights from Manchester make a long weekend possible and we did just that travelling Saturday to Wednesday. On arrival the sights we saw whilst driving the twenty minutes to our hotel, you knew you were in a very different part of the word - donkeys and carts walking next to cars, motorbikes and buses – the hustle and bustle - just what I was expecting! We stayed at the Club Med Palmeraie around twenty minutes from the centre of Marrakech and very comfortable it was too. It is built in authentic Moroccan sand stone and there was something for everybody. Going all inclusive means that you don’t have to think about money, you just eat from the extensive buffet and it would have been rude not to partake in the odd cocktail whilst lounging by the pool. We quickly settled in and had a tour of the hotel to check out all the facilities, there really is so much to do, you can do as much or as little as you wish, and being that short distance from Marrakech centre, you can take the courtesy bus into the town whenever you wish and visit the many sights Marrakech has to offer. Aquafit was next – and wow were we worked hard? The temperature was around 33 degrees when we were there so a welcome cool off in the pool was the order of the day. Club Med has an adults only Riad in the grounds of the hotel, on entering the walls of the Riad, you were swept along by the instant calm which surrounds the resort, misters spray cool water over the covered bar, a very welcome cooling down after a game of tennis or work out in the gym! Evening meals could be taken outside at the main restaurant or you can eat as we did at the El Kebir tent canopied tables were the setting for our traditional Moroccan feast! Quad biking with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop! Very special memories of our quad safari through the desert will stay with me forever and to relax our aching muscles we treated ourselves to a luxurious massage in the Cinq Mondes spa – superb. I’d particularly wanted to visit Marrakech to visit the Souks – the expansive markets where you are expected to bargain with the traders; in fact they are disappointed if you pay the asking price! We had great fun working our way through the never ending passage ways and came away with plenty of slippers, leather goods and many scarves which we didn’t know we needed! Club Med has another sister hotel in Marrakech, just on the edge of the main El Fna Square – the Club Med Medina, super tiled rooms in typical Moroccan style, inviting pool and you are just away from the busy square, where horses, people and traffic go about their everyday life – the atmosphere was palpable! We took a Caleche – a horse and cart around the square and it was just amazing to see the street traders selling just about anything! I had a look at ‘Riad’ whilst I was in Marrakech; a Riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard. Such a treat lay behind the door of Riad 58 Blu. I’ve been in touch with the owner, Paulo before for clients, so I contacted him and he was very pleased to show me around his lovely home. I wouldn’t hesitate to visit Marrakech again in fact I am already looking forward to my next visit!

In early November this year, I was very honoured to be chosen to visit India on a 9 day tour of Goa and Kerala, Southern India. I've never been to India before, the country was on my ‘wish list’ I was so thrilled to be chosen to visit. This unique alternative to hotels, Homestays combine the comfort and distinction of a boutique hotel with the personal hospitality, informality and local knowledge enjoyed when staying with family friends. A Homestay offers an insight into the culture, traditions, history and everyday life of an Indian family. What’s more, we got the chance to enjoy authentic Indian food at its very best – locally grown and reared produce home cooked! I began my journey at Heathrow! We met up and checked in for our 9 hour flight to Mumbai – formerly Bombay with Jet Airways. I was very impressed with the service, seats and food and even had a good sleep on the way! We connected with our flight to Goa and then travelled to the first of our homestays, Stain Glass Cottage for our 2 night stay. We quickly unpacked then asked the owner’s husband to take to see the beach as it was only 2 kms away. It was so busy there, it was Friday evening and the place was buzzing full of atmosphere! That could be because it was also Diwali – the Festival of Lights that day! In the evening we were treated to a lovely banquet in a local restaurant and a very welcoming after dinner firework display and diwali cakes followed at the homestay the other 4 Travel Counsellors were staying at, the Arco Iris. Whilst in Goa we visited other homestays and were very impressed with the diversity and uniqueness of each property, have a look at the photos and you will see what I mean! We also visited St Francis of Assisi Convent and Church in the capital of Old Goa, Panjim, local markets and did a cruise around the harbour by night. We flew to Kerala via Chennai ( Madras) and had an unscheduled stop in Bangalore due to a cyclone! We then travelled west to the hillside location of Munnar. As we’d arrived in the dark we didn’t fully appreciate the scenery. The next morning when we got up we were amazed by the surroundings they were breathtaking! We visited the highest tea plantation in the world,Kolukkumalai, where we were treated to a tour around the factory and sampled the local brew. The long drive up to the plantation was awesome, the view spectacular and well worth the long journey which can only be made by jeep! On the way, we passed women working in the fields going about their everyday life, they also live on the hillside in small villages, alongside where they work. We also got to go on an elephant trek, something I have never done before and I can highly recommend. Next was a plantation visit where the owner proudly introduced us to pepper trees, chillis, coffee, cardamom, tapioca, vanilla plants all growing together………the list is endless! The next morning, we had a very early start to do a jungle safari and trek, I wouldn't’t have missed this for anything. The anticipation of seeing the animals in their natural habitat and the excitement when one of the drivers spotted elephant and we drove at top speed to find then round the next corner. Unfortunately they were next to a pylon! We also saw monkeys and water buffalo roaming free! In the afternoon, we did a jungle trek where we were treated to more wildlife of a very different variety leeches, butterflies, monkeys and there are said to be tigers, however we didn’t see any! On the last day, we were treated to an Indian head massage followed by an Ayurvedic massage, native to southern India. I felt so relaxed, that I could float out of the room!! Which was appropriate as in the afternoon we cruised in a beautiful houseboat on the back waters of Kerala. We set off from our homestay at Vembanad House. What a thoroughly relaxing way to spend our last afternoon. We just watched the world go by, the local fishermen going about their everyday life and were cooked a superb Keralan meal of local fish, salad and vegetables. I absolutely loved my first visit to India and this definitely won’t be my last! I’m already planning when I can go back there with my family!

I had always dreamed about visiting Egypt from as long as I can remember so when I was taken there for my birthday as a surprise - I certainly wasn't disappointed. We arrived into Cairo at 3am to be met by our guide and transferred to our hotel - the Mena House, the streets were busy with people milling around and you would have thought it was the middle of the day, not the night! Our room was a pyramid view room and as it was so dark, we had to take the porters word for it. It was only when the sun came up that we could see the great Pyramids of Giza - they were so close you felt as if you could touch them. We spent 3 nights in Cairo and whilst there visited the Egyptian Museum. I could have spent a week there, it was so interesting, there is a whole room dedicated to Tutankhamen along with a room of mummies - very spooky. We also went inside the largest of the 3 pyramids - no mean feat when you are claustrophobic, but I knew I would regret it if I didn't go inside. We then flew down to Luxor for a 2 night stay at the Movenpick Jolie Ville hotel; a lovely hotel out of the centre of Luxor, but near enough to get the hotel's courtesy bus into the centre to visit the many sights Luxor has to offer, including the Luxor and Karnak Temples, the Valley of the Kings and Queens. Then we had a fantastic 4 night cruise on board the Oberoi Phillae boat from Luxor to Aswan. The boat is lovely, very authentic, it had a feel of the boat they used on 'Death on the Nile'. I can honestly say that I can't wait to return - Egypt is full of lovely surprises and from my experience one not to be missed...

In Ocober 2000 we went to Albuquerque New Mexico to compete in the balloon fiesta – sponsored by Kodak and at the time the most photographed event in the world. We went with our friends who owned and flew their own hot air balloon. What a wonderful experience, flying over the plains of Albuquerque with 700 other balloons, some of them special shapes balloons, the stage coach of Wells Fargo, Ben and Jerry’s cow and a pumpkin to name but a few. We had time to fly and compete – in such competitions as dropping a marker from the balloon basket and the nearest marker to the target on the ground won. Also to fly from the launch field to a certain point. On the days we could not fly due to bad weather or in the daytime – best times for hot air ballooning are in early morning or in the early evening so we had free time in the day. We visited nearby Santa Fe, and travelled by cable car to the Sandia Peak – an awesome view over Albuquerque from the Peak at sunset…………. After the 8 days we spent in Albuquerque, we packed the hot air balloon and basket away for shipping back the UK, as we had the rest of our holiday to look forward to. We drove west through the rest of New Mexico to Flagstaff Arizona where we spent two nights in log cabins in the forest and were lulled to sleep at night by the sounds of the local wildlife, Elks and Deer! On our second day there, Andrew, my husband and I along with our 2 ballooning friends, Stephen and Ben and a close friend Pete Cravenfrom Hebden Bridge who had emigrated to Flagstaff a few years prior, set off at 5am to drive to the South rim of the Grand Canyon 70 miles away. We took a picnic but had Macdonalds for breakfast sitting on the rim – the view was breathtaking! We then set off on our walk to the foot of the Grand Canyon – a 15 mile round trip hike down to the Colorado River – the distance from the rim to the foot of the Canyon is 1 mile. So off we set in the lovely morning sunshine down the switch backs – the man made path made of steps edged in wood, hard work on the knees! We passed the sign that said ‘Do not attempt to walk into and out of the Canyon in a Day, people have died attempting this’! Still we carried on. Got the bottom, ate our picnic and then set off back to the top. After nearly treading on a rattle snake we paddled in the freezing cold water of the Colorado River. We climbed back up the paths, we were overtaken by lots of mules with sensible passengers in the saddle and eventually got back to the top at 8pm – in the dark. What a thoroughly hard day but also very enjoyable, however I am not tempted to try this again, maybe next time, if there is a next time, we will book a room at the hostel in the Canyon bottom! After a good night’s sleep, we drove west again through Death Valley onto Las Vegas – what a contrast from the previous part of the holiday! We had an action packed 24 hours, where we stayed at the New York New York Hotel, we visited Mandalay Bay Hotel, Luxor Hotel and onto Caesar’s Palace where had a superb evening at the magic dinner show with a difference. Walking was quite tricky on this day due to the walk the day before, I had to walk down stairs backwards to stop the pain in my calves!!
