Accessible Family Escape

We love to get away in October. After the end of the busy summer travel period and before the winter sets in, it is great to get some sun and top up on vitamin D.

You need to find the right destination at this time of year as the season comes to an end, some hotels are closing, and the weather can be turning making pools too cold to swim in – but the Canary Islands offer year round sunshine and are a great choice for Winter sun.

This year we took a trip with our extended family and had to consider mobility needs and travelling with small children. Los Pocillos in Lanzarote was perfect. A beautifully flat resort with wide paths and a long promenade. It is a small resort, but with all you would need. Plenty of shops for a browse, a choice of great restaurants, bike hire, a lovely wide beach and more. Being only ten minutes from the airport is a huge benefit too. It was lovely to see the planes coming on and off the island, but we never found the noise an issue.

We chose the Hotel Floresta to be our home for the short break and it didn’t disappoint! The 2 bedroom apartments for families were a great size with nice kitchen area (not that we used any more than the kettle and fridge!) and were located around the quieter pool which was perfect. The hotel had ramps through out and arranged a mobility scooter to hire. They have a very clear focus on environmentally friendly features (no single use plastics for example) and sustainable tourism.

The location was fantastic with a taxi rank and bus stop right outside the hotel. A short hop takes you to lively Puerto del Carmen with its nightlife and shopping centre, and the bus takes you to Teguise market on Sundays. We visited Rancho Texas for the children, an animal and water park, but the adults loved it too. It is very accessible with no steps throughout, but the ramps can be steep, especially up to the dolphin show! There is a choice of boat trips from Puerto del Carmen harbour, including wildlife spotting, the glass bottom boat and romantic sunset cruises – something for everyone.

I would definitely recommend a break here, if you want to discuss your winter sun escape, give me a call.
