Crown Princess - Repositioning
Thursday 15th May 2008

I have discovered a new experience that was totally unexpected. On May 15th my wife and I flew into Ft. Lauderdale where we boarded the Crown Princess for a 16 day trans-atlantic cruise. Our longest cruise up to this point was 7 days and I must admit to more than a little trepidation. Both of us were concerned about both the length of time aboard and the number of uninterrupted "sea" days.
We had nothing to fear, but fear itself. This was one of the most relaxing, and yet active, vacations we have been on. To sit in the promenade and watch the variety of entertainers, enjoy the on board shopping, take in an afternoon movie, listen to the destination specialist, take an education course, try our luck in the casino, and take in an evening show all prevented any boredom. Finding the time to do my reading was the biggest problem I had.
The staff could not have been more professional. This "mega" ship is definitely designed to give a "small ship" feel. We never felt extremely crowded or "herded". Passenger gathering areas were spaced so that we never had the feeling of being crowded. I would say that the average age was 60 - 65, with very few children.
The shore excursions that we experienced were well run and very informative. I still think that the pricing on cruise ship excursions is somewhat pricey, but we always use the ship excursions to eliminate missing the ship and being left. All information provided on each port and the specific excursions was detailed and appropriate.
I would advise that if you have not taken a trans-atlantic, you give it a shot. We will be doing this again. This time we went from west to east and then north (Azors, Portugal, Spain, France, England, Norway, and then Copenhagen); and I believe that we will next start in Venice and cruise through the Meditteranean and then to North America.
